It's May, and that means that it's Healthy Vision Month. When was the last time you had a comprehensive eye exam? Getting your eyes tested regularly is one of the most effective steps you can take to make sure your vision remains healthy. During the procedure, your eye care professional examines your eyes, looking for frequently occurring vision problems and eye diseases, some of which do not have early modes of detection.
The procedure will begin with what's referred to as a visual acuity test through the use of an eye chart to measure how your vision behaves at various distances. The exterior of your eye will also be assessed.
After these tests are completed, your optometrist may proceed to examine your retina using specialized diagnostic technology. This examination is extremely important, because it will tell your optometrist necessary information about the state of your eye health, as well as information regarding your overall health. To give an example, it can show warning signs of diseases such as diabetes and also point to high blood pressure.
You will also be screened for signs of glaucoma. Your eye care professional will do this by determining the pressure in your eye, using a small puff of air directed onto your eye.
